THE SIGNAL IN ONE SENTENCE
Website owners can now choose whether their pages appear in and help support Google’s generative AI Search features. Leaving also means giving up traffic and impressions from those features.
01
WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGED
Google first announced the control on June 3 and updated the announcement on August 31 to say the feature had reached websites worldwide. The toggle lives in Search Console and covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover.
If a site opts out, its links and content will not appear in or help ground those generative responses. Google also says the site will not receive traffic or impressions from those AI surfaces. The setting is not used as a ranking signal for search results outside generative AI Search.
Search Console is also adding visibility information, including generative-feature impressions, pages that appear in AI responses, and the countries where those appearances happen. That begins to turn a fuzzy distribution channel into something publishers can measure.
02
WHY THIS MATTERS
For independent publishers, creators, and portfolio owners, this is not simply a privacy switch. It is a distribution decision. Participation may bring discovery, but it also allows a search product to summarize work before a person visits the source.
The useful response is to measure before choosing. Record how much valuable traffic arrives from AI features, which pages create it, and whether those visitors actually subscribe, enquire, or keep reading.
03
WHERE IT COULD HELP
- Create a baseline of AI Search impressions before changing the setting
- Compare visits from generative features with meaningful actions on the site
- Keep unique reporting, first-hand work, and original images easy to identify
- Review the choice separately for a publication, portfolio, store, and private knowledge base
KEEP A HAND ON THE WHEEL
The source combines a June announcement with an August worldwide rollout update. Opting out affects generative AI Search visibility and its traffic, but Google says it does not change ranking outside those features.
